Having a baby is one of life’s greatest gifts. Close Pediatric Urology offers prenatal consultation to families who are expecting a baby who has had an abnormality detected by prenatal ultrasound. While this can be a stressful time for the expecting families, Dr. Close provides a clear explanation and plan for the baby.
During the consultation visit, Dr. Close reviews the prenatal ultrasounds with the family and carefully explains the baby’s urologic anatomy and possible diagnoses. The tests that might be needed after the baby is born are also explained.
Often babies with a urologic abnormality detected prenatally do not require surgery. They do require careful evaluation and follow-up to establish the diagnosis and to prevent infection or damage to the kidneys or bladder during the baby’s development.
Some of the more common in-utero conditions that may be seen are those that cause Prenatal Hydronephrosis, (also referred to as Prenatal Pelviectasis).
• UPJ Obstruction (Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction)
• Posterior Urethral Valves
• Vesicoureteral Reflux
• Obstructed Megaureter
• Ureterocele
Other abnormalities that may be detected by Prenatal Ultrasound but do not result in Hydronephrosis are:
• Multi Cystic Dysplastic Kidney
• Duplication Abnormalities
• Solitary Kidney
• Bladder Exstrophy
To insure the best care for the baby, Dr. Close works with the referring obstetrician covering not only the baby’s diagnosis but also in preparing for any special conditions anticipated for the baby’s delivery.
The primary concern and objective of the Close Pediatric Urology team is to provide the highest quality care and comfort for the baby and the family as soon as possible after birth.
